What information can
you expect to find?
We make full transcriptions of each register
entry and index the entries by surname. The detail under each entry varies according to what
was recorded at the time. In the case of burial registers this covers a
minimum of name, age and date of burial but
other details such as occupation, address,
named relatives and even occasionally cause of death.
We have already completed a large selection of Church of England burial
registers
from 1813 onwards and a number of cemetery records.
Copies of these transcriptions are available for purchase on CD
or microfiche (see relevant
publications pages).
We also offer a
search
service of these 270,000 records.
Census and other
records
Census records
We have completed a
full transcription of the 1891 Census for Sheffield and Bradfield and an
index of the 1861 Census for Sheffield Rotherham and Bradfield.
These are available for purchase on CD and microfiche (see relevant
publications pages).
There is also a
search service.
We have a continuing project to transcribe
the remaining nineteenth
century census records for Sheffield.
- Transcribing of the 1851
Census for Sheffield is
in progress. As sections are completed they are added to this
website. See the menu under Online Indexes.
Civil registration records
We have an ongoing project
to index the birth and marriage registers in the keeping
of Sheffield
Register Office. The Sheffield Register Office holds records relating to
all areas that fall within the boundaries of the modern metropolitan
borough. These include registers relating to the Ecclesall Bierlow
and Sheffield Registration Districts.
- Births registered
between 1837-1889 have been completed and published for purchase on
4 CDs. 500,000 records have now been transcribed.
Volunteers always welcome

made available, why not consider joining our team of project volunteers.
You do not need to live locally but it is useful if you have access to a
