Message Board - Hints & Tips

  • Who Can Read and Post Messages on The Message Board
Both Society members and visitors to our site are welcome to post and read messages on our board.

  • What Type Of Messages Can Be Posted
Messages posted must be Family or Local History related. Any "Off Topic" messages will be removed.

  • Look-Up's
Many of our frequent board users will gladly look up information in the indexes they hold. So don't be afraid to ask for help with lookups in Census Indexes, Parish Records, Trade Directories etc.  (we are unable to advertise these "look-ups" as in most cases it would infringe Copyright Laws)

  • Message Content
When posting a message be sure to think about its content before you click on the submit button, our new message board allows you to view and read your message before posting. Make it clear in your Subject line what your posting is about, e.g. the name(s) you are researching and year(s), etc.
If you are asking a question, make it clear what information you are asking for and where ever possible try and include details about information you already have,  i.e. If you are searching for an individual and you have already found him/her in the 1841, 1851 and 1861 census but you are having trouble locating the person after 1861, make it clear in your posting. The same applies to Parish Registers, Trade Directories and other records.

  • Will I Get a reply
The clearer you make your message the more chance you have of getting a reply. Once you have posted your message, don't forget to check back to see if anyone has replied to your posting (unless you choose the "Email you on replies" option). Replies rarely happen instantly, it may take a few days.

  • Email Addresses
When posting a message on the board you do not have to give your email address, You will need to give it if  you would like replies to be sent directly to you off list.
If you supply your email address and tick the "Email you on replies" box an automatic email notification will will be sent to your email address if someone replies to your message.

  • Don't Be Afraid to Offer Help and Advice to Others
Have a read of some of the other messages on the board, at first sight they may appear to be of no interest to your research, but there is always a chance that you may have the answer to someone else's query.

  • Virus Protection
Please be sure that your PC is protected by an up to date Virus Checker when corresponding with others via email.
AVG Anti-Virus software can be downloaded from the web free of charge from
    http://www.grisoft.com

  • A Vote Of Thanks
On behalf of the Society I would like to thank our message board users for the time and effort they put into making the message board a success.

Good Luck with your research.
