Society Membership
Family History research is increasingly popular and many
people are finding that the search for their ancestral roots
is an
addictive pastime. Joining a family history society can be a real help
with your research. It puts you in
touch with people with similar interests and gives you an
opportunity to share your research problems. Many people find it helpful to join a society close to
home as well as one that covers the place where their ancestors lived.
Sheffield & District Family History Society is open to
anyone interested
in the study of Genealogy and Family History.
Membership - Annual
membership costs £8.00 and runs from 1st January to 31st December. Join by
completing and returning the membership form. Overseas residents may
prefer to use the membership facility on the Society's web pages at
GENfair.com.uk where you may pay in your own currency using secure credit
facilities.
Meetings -
These are held in Sheffield on the third Monday of the month (except for August and December).
There is usually a speaker and talks cover a wide range of topics relevant to
family history and the Sheffield area. There is also an opportunity to discuss your research
with others and peruse
the bookstall. See Society News for forthcoming events.
The Flowing Stream -
Our quarterly journal
is published
in Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter. New members receive copies
of the journal for
the whole of the calendar year in which they join. Members research interests
are published in the journal and all members are invited to contribute articles
and items of interest. With luck you will make contact with someone else
researching the same families.
Projects -
Members of the Society have been active in transcribing
a variety of census
returns, parish registers
and other records over
the years. Indexes to the Census Returns for Sheffield 1841 to 1891 are
available for use free of charge at Sheffield Archives and Sheffield Local
Studies Library. Copies may also be ordered for inspection through your
local Church of Latter Day Saints Family History Centre. Much of the
material transcribed and indexed in recent years is available for purchase. See
under Publications. We are always pleased to welcome new volunteers to
help with our transcription projects. See under Projects.
Society Library
- The Society has a library of research guides and other printed material
relevant to Sheffield family history. The library is accessible on open
shelves at Sheffield Archives, 52 Shoreham Street, Sheffield S1 4SP.
