The Society Journal - The Flowing Stream
The title of our Society
journal reflects Sheffields
industrial history in which water power
was all
important to
work the grinding wheels, tilt hammers
and other machinery that were
used in the production
of cutlery and steel before the advent of steam power.
The journal is a prime point of contact
with members, many of whom live far away from Sheffield and
therefore cannot attend our meetings. It is laid out to
enable readers to find
easily the information they are
seeking. After
a brief editorial which aims to draw the
readers attention to any item of particular
importance
new members are listed. The
following list of section
titles indicates the scope of material printed:
The central part of the booklet contains
a variety of articles submitted by members on a
variety of
subjects.
They often include stories about a members family
or how they
researched
their family; reminiscences about life in
the past in Sheffield; lists of names etc extracted from relatively unknown
sources; information on how to access unusual historical
data; information about
the history of the area and
countless other topics. Finally there are
book
reviews and details of books that could be of special interest to Sheffield
researchers.
Members are encouraged
to submit articles, poems and small snippets of information as
well as
transcriptions
of records they have used.
The journal aims to keep members informed
about the projects Society members are
engaged upon and
provides
information
about Society publications in book form,
microfiche, CD ROM and disk.
The
Flowing Stream is sent out to members four times a year.
